Possessive nouns คือ การทำคำนามให้อยู่ในรูปของการแสดงความเป็นเจ้าของ
การใช้ Possessive nouns
การใช้ Possessive nouns สามารถแบ่งออกได้เป็น 2 วิธี
1. การใช้ Apostrophe + s (‘s)
นำ ‘s ไปใส่ท้ายคำนามที่ต้องการแสดงความเป็นเจ้าของ ซึ่งคำนามเอกพจน์ (Singular Noun) และคำนามพหูพจน์ (Plural Noun) มีวิธีการใส่ ‘s แตกต่างกันดังนี้
คำนามเอกพจน์ (Singular Noun) สามารถใส่ ‘s ที่หลังคำนามนั้นได้ทันที เช่น a boy’s bag, a girl’s hat, a doctor’s name
คำนามพหูพจน์ (Plural Noun) เนื่องคำนามพหูพจน์มีทั้งแบบที่เติม s กับคำนามพหูพจน์แบบผิดปกติ (Irregular Plural Noun) ที่เปลี่ยนรูป ซึ่งทั้งสองแบบนี้มีวิธีการใส่ ‘s ที่ต่างกัน
– คำนามพหูพจน์ที่ลงท้ายด้วย s จะใส่ Apostrophe (‘) เพียงอย่างเดียวท้ายคำนามพหูพจน์นั้น The students’ bags, brothers’ pens
– คำนามพหูพจน์แบบผิดปกติ (Irregular Plural Noun) ที่เปลี่ยนรูปไปจากเอกพจน์ จะใส่ ‘s (Apostrophe + s) เช่น men’s, women’s, children’s, people’s
2. การใช้ of
จะใช้แสดงความเป็นเจ้าของสำหรับคำนามที่ไม่ใช่บุคคล โดยวาง of ไว้หน้าคำนามที่แสดงความเป็นเจ้าของ เช่น The tail of a cat. (หางของแมว), The legs of a bird (ขาของนก)
